When thinking about a change in professional direction, many people scan the career horizon looking for jobs that peek their interest. Before Michael Brown made the leap from engineering into software sales and subsequently into owning his own businesses, he carefully assessed his skills and motivation.
“I was honest with myself,” he says. “I knew I wouldn't be extremely successful with my engineering skills alone. My engineering skills were a little above average at best. I was good at problem solving, but I wasn't highly technical. I didn't enjoy the long-term technical things. I wasn't above average in that, but I was above average when it came to problem solving and above average with people skills.”
After graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in chemical engineering in 1989, Brown went to work for IBM as a process engineer for almost four years. His next major career stop was a software sales job that turned into a position as national sales manager for the company. Today, Brown is owner and operations manager Consultingsolutions.net, a software and computer training school.
He also owns The Brown Team an e-commerce, distribution business that he started in 1991 with his wife Adriane. The success of this business allowed her to leave a computer-programming career at Accenture and run the distribution business from a home office.
His story has a happy ending, but when he left the corporate world to go out on his own, family and friends wondered if he was being hasty.
“I was willing to take a risk at a young age,” he says. “I decided to go with the talents that were more than what would keep me in a job. I enjoyed people and I enjoyed being in a position of leadership. I'm a hard worker, but I don't like being overly managed. In a tight corporate environment you're removed from some of the excitement of working.”
